Serve the Lord with gladness!
Come into his presence with singing!
Psalm 100:2
There is no dress-code at our church, but most people are dressed in semi-formal or formal clothing.
Our worship services are somewhat traditional in nature – modelling the liturgy of the reformation. The worship service is primarily a meeting place between God and his people. God greets his people. He encourages them in their faith in Jesus Christ as they hear his Word read and preached. He also strengthens their faith with the sacraments (Baptism and Lord's Supper). Finally, God sends his people out with a blessing. In response to God's grace and mercy, his people confess their help in the Lord God, sing psalms and hymns to him, seek him in prayer, and give offerings for the poor.
Babysitting is available for babies and toddlers. Older children are welcome and encouraged to sit with their families and worship God with the rest of the church members.
The main focus of the worship service is the preaching of the Word of God. Sermons are not topically selected but an exposition of the Bible text chosen. In the morning service a Bible passage is explained and is applied to the lives of God's people. In the afternoon service the sermon typically focuses is on a specific topic of Scripture as it is summarized in the Heidelberg Catechism (one of our confessional documents).
We have two worship services every Sunday: one at 10:00am and the other at 3:00pm. People typically arrive 10-15 minutes before the service.
The music and singing is responsive throughout the worship. We use songs selected and approved by our church federation. The songs are based on the Psalms or are hymns that are scripturally grounded. Music is typically accompanied by an organ or piano. The focus is not to provide a musical performance but on congregational singing as a form of lifting our hearts in worship.
When you enter the church building, our host family will greet you, provide you the weekly newsletter including the liturgy of worship and introduce you to an usher.
You can sit wherever you want, but the ushers can also assist in finding a place to sit. The usher will assist you in providing a pew bible and song book for use in worship.
Never. You connect with us at your own pace. We would love to simply support you in your journey.
We believe that the Lord’s Supper is a celebration for and by the local congregation as body of our Lord Jesus Christ. Our practice is that only those guests who are members of a Canadian Reformed church or a sister church and have made public profession of the Reformed faith and lead a godly life are admitted (see art. 61 of the Church Order). As a rule, the status of these guests is articulated in an “attestation” [testimony] issued by the elders of the church in which this guest is a member.
Such an attestation assists the elders of the local church in their supervision over the table of our Lord. It is the responsibility of the local elders to keep the celebration of the Lord’s Supper holy. They are called to be sure to the best of their ability, that all participants are true believers who are faithful in their adherence to the Reformed faith and walking a godly life. The elders are the shepherds of God’s flock (1 Pet. 5:2), and they have a responsibility to protect the flock from eating and drinking judgement upon themselves (1 Cor. 11:27-32 & 1 Cor. 5: 1-12).
As a visitor, please understand that we make no judgment on your faith or relationship with Christ. Although this procedure does mean that you will not be able to participate in the actual consumption of the bread and wine during the worship service, we are confident that you will still experience the great comfort of the sacrifice that our Lord Jesus Christ has made for us by witnessing the Lord’s supper and participating in the rest of the aspects of worship with the Communion of Saints in this place.
Typically worship last about 1 hour. However, following the morning worship we have a coffee social and would love if you would join us in fellowship!
Near the end of the service an offering bag will be passed around. The money collected is distributed by the deacons to needy members in the congregation or to another Christian organization. This is not required, but a response of worship.
Once the worship service is over you are welcome to stay and fellowship (following the morning service there is typically coffee and tea offered). Every Sunday a specific family (known as the host family) is more than willing to have you over for coffee after the service.
We believe God calls his people to be members of a faithful local church.
To become a member of Emmanuel, the first step is to contact our elders. They will have a short meeting with you to help get you started with the new member process.
You can become a member in one of the following three ways:
If you are a new believer, by making a public profession of your faith in Jesus Christ. If you have never been baptized, this will be done at the same time.
If you have already publicly professed your faith in another church, by meeting with our elders to discuss your faith with them.
If you are already a member of one of our sister churches, formally transfer your membership. This is usually done by acquiring a letter of attestation from your previous church and submitting it to the Emmanuel’s elders.
For what we proclaim is not ourselves,
but Jesus Christ as Lord…
